Karen Masumoto is a Japanese American director and Emmy-nominated editor born and raised in Los Angeles She has directed in mediums from film, VR, to AR exploring impactful storytelling through technology and journalism. Proudly non- binary and diagnosed with Bipolar disorder, identity plays a massive part in their storytelling. She has two rules on her sets: bring heart, not ego and come as you are.
The Director
“I utilized creativity as an outlet and tool to communicate hard feelings in my youth. Now I utilize film not only as my own tool but as a way to celebrate the uniqueness of others and to change the world’s approach to perceived “weaknesses.”

Nike SNKRS
An all-girls crew, directed by Karen Masumoto, showed up on two sides of the continent to tell the story of two amazing ladies: rapper Milli and singer/songwriter Yuna. This Wabi Sabi inspired shoe is the catalyst and platform for Milli and Yuna to discuss how they embrace their imperfections and use them as a foundation for their confidence and self-identity. Launched on Air Max Day in 2022.

Textured Waves
Textured Waves Collective was created to propagate the culture and sport of women's surfing towards women of color and underrepresented demographics through representation, community, and sisterly camaraderie. Valuing integrity, inclusion, and advocating diversity in the water, we created a piece showcasing the beauty of women of color in surfing.
